Ok I get extremely tired of having to double click everytime on a column that has larger text in order to make the column resize itself. It is tedious and I would much rather have it so that it automatically expands based on the text input. With Excel for Mac 2011 (OS X 10.6.8), when I insert text into a particular row, it won't wrap. Text wraps properly in other rows. I have tried Format Cells > Text control > Wrap text (and even applied it to the whole row), but still have the same problem. Answer: The problem is that Excel auto-sizes the row height when you paste text into Excel. So when you paste text, as you can see below, Excel will increase your row height and set your cell's attributes to 'wrap text'. To prevent Excel from auto wrapping text, right click on the row(s) and select Row Height from the popup menu.

I have copied some data into Excel 2010. I have found that some of the cells need to be widened to allow the data to fit. How do I automatically adjust the height of the cells to fit the content?

I have solved it like this:
Select the entire spreadsheet.
Double click the line in the margin in between the two rows.
This auto sizes every row not just the one row that I clicked on.
You can see a video of it here: Adjusting the Row Height of Rows in Excel
Der HochstaplerSelect the data then from menu Format->Column->AutoFit.
For Excel 2010, the menu is Home, Cells, Format, AutoFit Column Width.
For Excel 2015 (Mac) Preview it is still the same menu as Excel 2 and up to 2003 so Excel 2010 looks an odd outlier
Row Heights:Highlight the rows you want to re-size. click on the ribbon's 'Home' tab. In the 'Cells' group, click on the 'Format' icon -> a drop down menu will appear select 'AutoFit Row Height'.
Column widths:Highlight the columns you want to re-size. click on the ribbon's 'Home' tab. In the 'Cells' group, click on the 'Format' icon -> a drop down menu will appear select 'AutoFit Cell Width'.
by the way, if you have used Word for awhile, you will recognize the drop down menu.
In the margin, where the columns are named, double-click the border of the columns that needs to be widened, same place where you would click and drag to manually resize. This will autoresize it.
Mr AlphaMr AlphaAs many said:
- Menu Home tab -> Format->Column->AutoFit Row/Column Height
But to me, the trick was to select all the rows that need to be taken into account. Note that it might be counter intuitive but the first row is not enough to let Excel figure out it must resize based on all the content in each column.
So yeah, in a nutshell, to visualize a CSV file generated automatically:
Automatically Adust Columns For Wrap Text Excel Machinery
- CTRL+A
- Menu Home tab -> Format->Column->AutoFit Row/Column Height
You can use keyboard commands as such:
Ctrl+A to select all/select the entire spreadsheet
Alt+H(for hometab), Then O (for format), I(for autosize width).
When you tap Alt you get all the keyboard letter commands right on the ribbon.
keyboard commands are much faster once you get used to them.
As Dunc answer didn't work for me and other answers are incomplete:
- Select cells you want to auto resize or CTRL + a for all cells
- Menu Home tab -> Format->Column->AutoFit Row/Column Height

This Excel tutorial explains how to wrap text in merged cells in Excel 2016 (with screenshots and step-by-step instructions).
See solution in other versions of Excel:
Question: How do I wrap text in merged cells in Microsoft Excel 2016?
Answer:Select the merged cells that you wish to wrap text. In this example, we've selected cells A3:B3 which is the merged cell.
Right-click and then select 'Format Cells' from the popup menu.
When the Format Cells window appears, select the Alignment tab. Check the 'Wrap text' checkbox.
Now when you return to the spreadsheet, you will need to manually adjust the height of the row that contains the merged cells. To do this, position your mouse pointer over the bottom of the row until a double arrowed pointer appears. Then hold down the left mouse button and drag downward. Release the left mouse button when the row is the desired height.
Now when you view the contents of the merged cells, you will be able to see that the text is wrapping.
